Root Canals in Saint John

At Hi-Tech Dentistry, we strive to make every patient as comfortable as possible even during procedures like a root canal in Saint John. If you’ve noticed increased teeth sensitivity, swelling, or pain, talk to your dentist.

Your root canal system is the space within the hard layers of your tooth, and it is filled with a soft substance called pulp that contains blood vessels and nerves. When this area becomes infected with bacteria through cavities, cracks, and other damage, this can evolve into a serious oral health problem.

A root canal procedure clears up infected or damaged pulp from an affected tooth’s root canal system. Get more information from our Saint John clinic on root canals here.

Signs It’s Time for a Root Canal
It may not be entirely clear from your symptoms whether you need a root canal or not, so get examined by a dental professional. The following signs and symptoms may indicate that a visit to the dentist is due:

  • Pimple on the gum
  • Teeth that are sensitive to hot and cold foods
  • Swelling, tenderness, and tooth pain

Sometimes, there are no symptoms to indicate a root canal is required. That’s why visiting the dentist regularly for a general appointment is a smart idea. And, of course, make sure you brush your teeth!

How a Root Canal Treatment Works

Root canals can be done in a general dentist’s office or at an endodontist’s office. An endodontist has had additional education in treating pulp and nerves in teeth.

  1. First, you will receive a local anesthetic, such as freezing, in the area of treatment.
  2. Then, a rubber dam will be placed around the treatment area to prevent it from being contaminated by saliva.
  3. An opening is made into the tooth.
  4. The damaged pulp is removed using fine dental equipment.
  5. The root canal system is cleaned, enlarged, and sealed.
  6. The tooth may be sealed with a filling or a crown.

Root canals treatments are often done in one or two appointments.

Things You Should Know About Root Canals

Dental procedures may seem intimidating. Our clinic wants aims to reduce anxiety in the chair by keeping our patients informed. Here are some extra facts about root canals:

  • Your tooth may be tender after the procedure, but intense pain and swelling is uncommon
  • Most root canal procedures are successful; rarely, a second procedure is required
  • If a root canal doesn’t work, root canal surgery may be required
  • Getting a root canal won’t protect you against cavities and gum disease
  • Gum disease may spread and cause an abscessed tooth, or an abscessed tooth might spread infection to the gums and cause gum disease
  • It is possible for a child to get a root canal done for their baby tooth; you may be referred to a pediatric dentist

Your oral health has a large impact on your general health. Everyday functions like eating and speaking may be impeded if you don’t look after your dental health. Dr. Panjwani and the team at Hi-Tech Dentistry are committed to helping members of our community attain optimal oral health.
